Getting There - Traveling to Ypres (Ieper) & The Somme


Q. How do I get to Ypres from Calais?

A. On leaving the Ferry port, Hover port or Tunnel Terminal follow the Blue motorway signs for the A16/A25 direction DUNQUERQE. Follow this motorway and leave at exit 28. Get onto the A25 signed for LILLE, YPRES. Stay on this motorway and leave at exit 13 signed STEENVOOORDE / YPRES. At the end of the slip road turn left onto the D948 signed YPRES (IEPER). Follow this road across the old Border checkpoint into Belgium. At the end of the road is a T-Junction. Turn right onto the N38. Follow all signs for IEPER. On approaching IEPER take the exit signed for CENTRUM (Town center). Follow all signs for the Centrum until you are in the Market Square where there is plenty of car parking available.

The distance from Calais to Ypres town center is about 60 miles and takes about 75 minutes.

Q. How do I get to the Somme from Calais?

A. On leaving the Ferry port, Hover port or Tunnel Terminal follow the Blue motorway signs for the A16/A26 direction PARIS/REIMS. Stay on this motorway for some time until you come to the Motorway crossover for the A1. Exit here and get onto the A1 direction PARIS. Stay on this motorway and leave at Exit 14 signed for BAPAUME. Follow all signs for the D929 direction ALBERT.

The distance from Calais to Albert is about 100 miles and takes about 90 minutes.
